2011

Thursday November 17th, 2011

Greetings and welcome!

The big deer hunting season is only 48 hours away and people are getting geared up and moving for it. It might prove to be an interesting season weather-wise.

The first weekend looks like it starts out ok, but by afternoon on Saturday we could see some rain. Later into the evening that rain will likely change to snow before moving out.Right now it doesn’t look like too major of a snow storm for us. The folks west of about Rhinelander can expect 2-4 or 3-6 Saturday night.

Sunday looks a little better with the snow clearing out and a little wind behind the storm. Look for mid to upper 30s both days, and lows in the mid-20s overnight.

Behind that we could see some light snow about Monday. The rest of the week looks a little above normal for temps, and clear for precip. Look for a hi/lo of 40/25 for most of next week, though it could go a little warmer if I am reading the model right.

The GFS is showing another storm for the second weekend. That one looks like it will start out as rain Saturday and change to snow for Sunday. As shown, it could snow pretty good up here the second Sunday.

It is traditional around here to start deer hunting week with some bake sales. Here are the ones that I know of.

Tuesday of deer hunting week brings the FREE buffet and raffles at Rapids Resort. Yes you read that right, free. Hopefully folks buy a few drinks with dinner and they have a mountain of stuff to raffle off.

Rapids is also having a Thanksgiving dinner buffet. They are in good company with Jungle Jim’s, Peshtigo River Resort, The Twin Bridge Rescue Squad (11am-2pm), Hilltop, and Twin Bridge Resort.

The does dancing for dollars thing is going on for deer hunting too. Look for that on weekends at the Curve Inn, Thornton’s, Green Lake Tap in Mountain, and a new place up in Townsend called Beaver’s Bar.

So far my unheated well house hasn’t been a problem. I will probably go out there later today and set up a light bulb to offer at least some heat. There were a couple of nights that got me a little nervous, but so far so good.

Today has my attention because the daytime high will only be around freezing, and tonight it could go into the low 20s.  Usually as long as there is a warm day between the cold nights we are ok. Today doesn’t look very warm, though the sun will help. Sometime next week I will go to work on setting up the heater and plugging in heat tape, along with the insulation on the well house itself. Usually we are OK through deer hunting, but after that all bets are off.

This week took me toward Lakewood and I was surprised how much more snow that they had from last week’s storm. They actually had to plow side roads and parking lots, and there are snow piles already. There is only patchy snow in the woods, but at one point I’d guess that hey had 4-6″ plus based on plow piles. Rumor has it that Antigo saw 9″. Considering how wet and heavy the snow was, that had to be ugly.

That is about it for this visit. Have a fun time at deer camp and be safe.

Friday 11-11-11

Greetings and welcome!

The snow storm this week was a good heads up that winter is coming. It was a strong storm on a perfect path to nail us with snow. It even had the classic double barrel low pressure area.

Had the ground been frozen and the air a little cooler it would have been a significant storm. The end result was 2-4″ of really wet snow with slush under it. The cold nights behind the storm have frozen it, and the last inch or so of crusty snow and ice remain. Places like roads and my gravel driveway are dry again.

There were a few trees and branches taken down, but not many. As I said before, the high winds of Fall cleared out a lot of the dead stuff.

Driving in it Wednesday night on a back road I got into the slush a little. The front tires started throwing it forward, and I’d drive into it, blasting the windshield. That is some sticky slushy snow. Now the melt from it freezing overnight has brought the first icy steps.

Most of it will go away this weekend. Tomorrow looks sunny and 45-50. Sunday brings clouds, 10-15mph winds, and a 40% chance of rain. The NWS is looking for a low of 25-30 tonight and 40 Saturday night.

I looked ahead to opening weekend of deer hunting on the GFS model that goes out 16 days. It is showing a big storm going over MN that Thursday and Friday, and us maybe getting a little Saturday. Sunday looks nice, but it might be cool and windy behind the storm. The second weekend looks clear and warmer than normal. At 8-15 days out the forecast is mostly a novelty, but inquiring minds want to know.

I don’t have any events for this weekend, but next week I will bring on the updated list of deer hunting specials and activities.

That is about it from here. Have a good weekend and thank you for visiting!
