Wednesday 9/30/15

Greetings and welcome!

It is a chilly one outside tonight. Right now Athelstane Weather is showing 31.8ºF and I would be surprised  if it didn’t drop a little more by morning. It is about the normal time of year for the first hard frost or freeze.

We had been enjoying really pleasant weather in the 70s for the past week or so. That ended with a cold front and some rain, and now we are looking at pleasant more seasonal weather in the 60s for the next week or so. There is no obvious chance of rain for at least a week.

The fall colors are quite apparent now, and this should be a good weekend for viewing them. Chris commented on how fast that they changed late last week and into last weekend. The maples and paper birch are starting to show some color, and everywhere you look there is something changing.

We are not at peak yet, but it is coming. I saw a picture on the front page of the Iron Mountain Daily News that showed a spectacular maple forest in its full glory. That should be here soon.

That is news for tonight. Have a good week and thank you for visiting!

Friday night 9/25/15

Greetings and welcome!

My apologies for the brevity of last night’s post. I really wanted to get the information out, and it was late.

Tonight I have an event to add, and an official update on the 141 construction.

The added event is The Crivitz Fall Harvestfest Craft Show at the Crivitz High School Sturday the 26th. http://www.crivitz.com/event.php?details=218

Item two is the 141 detours in and south of Crivitz. When I was there today it was not the Peshtigo River Bridge being replaced, it is the Left Foot Creek Bridge about 2 miles south.

Also being closed is the railroad crossing right by the Citgo in Crivitz. When I looked today they had the rail bed excavated back in both directions and they were ready to rip up the road crossing.

You can get around both obstacles with a little navigating.

When I was in town today I got a picture of a run off copy of the official take on the construction. Between the copy of a copy of a copy and my $8 TracFone, it isn’t very good, but clicking it and making it full size will help.

The weekend weather looks great, get out there and enjoy it while you can. Have a good weekend and thank you for visiting!

Greetings and welcome!

Two days ago I was looking for splashed of color and not seeing many. Yesterday driving to Lakewood and Townsend they were abundant. The same goes for the ride home from work yesterday. The big show is starting!

Here are some events for this weekend, including the Silver Cliff Soup and Chili Festival.

Have a good weekend and thank you for visiting!

Greetings and welcome!

We have been having some nice weather lately. I always appreciate September for its moderate temperatures and a few less mosquitoes and wood ticks. The weekend looks very nice too. Yeeha!

Fall colors are at the top of my list to talk about today. Usually they are getting started by now, but this year it isn’t much of a show yet. The sumac are changing and some of the early maples are having a branch or two start.

So far the colors that are showing are a little drab. I am not sure if it is too dry, not enough ( or too much?) diurnal temperature swing, or what the cause is. Whatever the case, the big show hasn’t started just yet. I expect that to change dramatically very soon.

They have pretty much wrapped up construction on 141 from Crivitz to Wausaukee. The road is nice and smooth and the new passing lanes are very nice.

TC left a comment on the 9th saying that 141 was closed down from 64 to Crivitz and that they were routing people onto 64, over to 180 in Marinette, and up to Wausaukee to rejoin 141,  I heard that the were working on the Peshtigo River bridge, making through traffic not an option.

This detour came up with the Crivitz to Wausaukee construction too. The towns and county didn’t want the state highway traffic rerouted onto to town or county roads. They aren’t built for it and the roads take a pounding. At that point the official detour had to be all on state roads, ie 64 and 180.

When I used to drive up 141 on busy weekends I would take 64 west about 6 miles to S from there I went north to 17th Rd and west a few blocks west onto Parkway Rd. That took me north into the High Falls/Caldron Falls Flowage area and up into Silver Cliff.

If you want to get around the construction and into Crivitz and points north on 141 you can stay on S until it hits P. Take P north to W and into Crivitz. Like the big project in Green Bay, it will be nice when it is done.

I have been a busy boy lately and haven’t had much time for blogging. I spent some time cleaning out the Big Sow Page, and now I am in the process of transferring it to a new cloud based SSD server. The old server was a good one, but this promises faster response times and no downtime. We will see.

I am off to see to that. I will be back soon. Have a good week and thank you for visiting!
