Greetings and welcome!

We had a cold night last night with clear skies and cold air behind another storm. The coldest that I saw locally was Wabeno that posted 34, and Athelstane weather that marked 37. There was a frost advisory out for areas north and west of here, but Marinette Co was not included. My windshield was damp with dew this morning, but it was not frozen as of 5am when I went out to check on it.

Even if it didn’t freeze hard, it still isn’t ideal for plants and gardens to get into the 30s. My rule of thumb is that you shouldn’t plant anything that you can’t bring inside before June 10th. While the average last frost datae is around Memorial Day, I had my gardens frosted up more than once in the first week in June. I am sticking to my guns on June 10th as the last frost day. By my recollection, I have only had one hard frost after that date, but quite a few the week before it.

The weather the past few weekends hasn’t been ideal, but they haven’t been total washouts either. I recall some nice days between the rain showers and storms. Probably the worst that I have seen this year was Saturday night of Memorial Day weekend. We had one storm blow through that was really raining hard with some strong winds. I opened my door in the thick of it to pull the storm door shut and in about two seconds I had a river of water running across the floor.

This weekend looks better, but only after a good soaking Friday night. There will be some warm humid air in place, so the storms could get a little rowdy. There are no watches or warnings yet. I do expect things to clear up Saturday morning and give way to a warm but nice weekend.

The unsettled weather has brought some pretty spectacular sunsets. This one was Sunday evening of Memorial Day weekend. Last night looked pretty nice with the clouds behind the storm. I meant to go to the lake with the camera, but got sucked into other things once I got home. I recall looking out of the window about 8:30 and seeing some colorful clouds being bottom lit by the sun and groaning about not being there for it.

The generous rain over the past few weeks has been good for the area. The whitewater rivers and waterfalls are in great shape for the coming weekend. Things that are green and growing are prospering, and now the raspberry bushes are in bloom adding a floral twist. I also haven’t heard the words Fire Danger in a few weeks.

In my daily travels the gators (mosquitoes) haven’t been too bad, but they are certainly present. I recall them coming out of the bushes after us when we went for the sunset Memorial Day weekend. I have only had a few ticks so far, but that might be a product of me not getting out enough. One quick trip into the tall grass to retrieve something yielded 3 in about 2 minutes. Bring Repel.

Last weekend I spotted one of the local fawns. Chris saw the Momma deer, and I told her to wait a minute and the fawn would come out of the bushes. Sure enough, the rowdy little fawn made an appearance only moments later. I got a few pictures through the kitchen window, and here are a couple to share.

At work I have a front seat view of the road construction on 141 in Wausaukee. Right now only northbound traffic is on the old road, and southbound traffic is being routed onto the western frontage road like they did when they rebuilt the bridge. This time they are getting a wider road through town, sidewalks, curbs and storm water management. There will be no road parking downtown when they are done, opening things up a little.

I keep reminding people that the construction of passing lanes on 141 between Wausaukee and the 4 lane near Beaver was a hassle last summer, now I don’t know how we got by without them. Hopefully there will be some gain for the pain on this project too.

As usual my time is up before I am really done, but here we are. Have a good week and thank you for visiting,

Greetings and welcome!

It has been a challenging week, and I haven’t had a chance to do a proper second update. Now I have to try to do it in 10 minutes. Here goes..

There is rain in the forecast but don’t let it ruin your weekend. This week we have had nice days with an occasional shower or line of storms. Be ready for anything but don’t let the forecast scare you off.

Events- There is a music festival in Crivitz. The No Wake Zone ( formerly the Peshtigo River Resort ) has live rock bands Saturday and Sunday night. The Lakewood Marti Gras is this weekend. Sunday there is an American Legion memorial service followed by a picnic at the picnic grounds in Silver Cliff.

Good news, gas has been staying around 2.40 a gallon, and so far they haven’t gone for the typical holiday weekend price gouge.

The Piggly Wiggly in Crivitz has good deals on charcoal ( Kingsford @ $5 a bag), Johnsonville brats, and both soda & beer.

The insect world is alive and well. Bring Repel.

Gotta run.

Have a good weekend and thank you for visiting!

Greetings and welcome!

May is always busy around here, but I can’t believe how this month flew by.

Today’s big news is that we are under a red flag warning for extreme wildfire conditions. We had a warm day with low humidity, pretty good winds, and a very dry fuel load. It would not have taken much to get a big fire going in a hurry. There have been plenty this week with 69 fires statewide.

We are very dry right now, but that will likely become less and less of a problem as the week progresses. Looking at the TV they are showing me the next 7 days being between 74 and 82, with rain possible daily. It didn’t seem very likely to have rain 7 days in a row so I took a look at my model guidance to see what the fuss was all about.

What I am seeing is a disorganized but massive area of low pressure setting up camp over the southwestern US for the next week and beyond. The counterclockwise circulation from that low pressure will be sending us warm moist air. That means warmer than normal temperatures  and rain chances daily.

The first wave of it is western WI and heading this way, and looks more like a couple of lines of isolated but strong thunderstorms than any kind of widespread soaking rain. That will probably vary from day to day.

We could use the rain as long as it doesn’t get t be too big of a part of our weekend. Right now it looks pretty good with only minimal rain chances Saturday and Sunday.

Spring is in full bloom now. We have mosquitoes and ticks, ferns opening up, tall grass where the mower didn’t go yet, and Sunday one of the resident does was spotted with a brand new fawn. I saw another doe and fawn tonight, but the fawn looked much bigger than Sunday’s. I am pretty sure that it was a different pair.

As mentioned, the ferns are starting to emerge, and are going from fiddlehead to leaf and branch. The trillium are still in bloom as are the marsh Marigolds, lilacs, and some cherry trees too. It is a fast changing world.

I am out of time for tonight, I am planning on visiting again later in the week.

Have a good week and thank you for visiting!

Greetings and welcome!

Spring continues to amaze here in Silver Cliff. The cherry trees are in bloom, and the marsh marigolds are everywhere. I actually cut some of the long grass in the front yard over the weekend, and I saw my first fern fiddle heads today. I also killed my first ( and so far only) mosquito Friday.

The weekend again found dry and windy conditions and a fire danger in the very high zone. I really wanted to have a  bonfire and BBQ grill going, but again it was just too risky.

My decision was verified when I was out in the field Saturday cutting up a tree. The field grass was crunchy and ridiculously dry, and I didn’t even like being out there with the chainsaw. It would not take much to light the whole field up.

When I looked up the fire danger Saturday there were three wildfires  within 30 miles according to the DNR site. I can take a hint. Maybe next weekend.

I heard on the radio this morning that the whole UP is under a red flag fire danger warning. That’s as bad as it gets, and we are what, 40 miles away?

We had a little rain today, but it was not enough to run off or make a puddle. We have another chance at rain about Thursday morning, and maybe even a thunderstorm could happen. I would expect less that a half inch of rain out of that one.

Behind that rain is a big cold wave just in time for the weekend. We are looking at high temps around 50 both days, and low temperatures around freezing.

I was looking at the upper air temperature maps and it would indeed be cold enough at the key levels of the atmosphere to snow if there were any precip.

I have to wrap it up, but here are a couple of event posters before I go.

Have a good week and thank you for visiting!
