2022

Greetings and welcome!

We had a warm week this week but nothing too terrible.

It is a lot quieter around here since the big holiday weekend. We went camping Fri-Mon so I can’t tell you how the weekend was around here, but my friends tell me that it was a really busy weekend. I know that the roads were sure packed when we were travelling, and when we got back Monday it was still pretty busy.

Surprisingly I have not seen any fall color yet. On Hwy F near Wheeler Lake there are a couple of big maples that often bring some of the earliest color. They were a light green, but nothing that I would call a color change. Some years I see the first leaves there change by the third week in August. This year seems to be late. I don’t have an explanation or even a guess as to why.

About the only event that I have for this weekend is five hours away in Minnesota. It is the first snowmobile event of the year, Hay Days. It is an absolutely huge event with snowmobile grass drags, a swap area that it 30 acres, motorcycle stunt shows, ATV mud bogs, and powersports dealers demo-ing new equipment. It is a really big deal.  Here is a link- https://haydays.com

The weather outlook for this weekend is a big question mark. The forecast models are showing a cold front coming into the state and setting up camp. Exactly where it is going to set up camp is impossible to know. One forecast model shows it all to the southeast of us, one shows us right on the far east end of it. Where it does set up they can expect a rainy weekend as wave after wave of rain slides down the frontal boundary. Rainfall estimates range from 2-3″ up to 6″ or more. At the moment both the GFS and NAM models are showing it somewhere else, and us in the 0.25-0.5″ range for the weekend.

I have seen this scenario many times before and it gives me ulcers with my forecasting. Will it be a nice weekend or will it rain 2-4″? A hundred miles can make the difference. Right now my bet is on a mostly nice weekend with occasional rain, but who knows?

Check out the poster for our wedding party below.

Have a good weekend and thank you for visiting!

Come & Party With Us!

As many of you know I got married in late June in a very small and a very quiet affair. I can promise you that the wedding party will not be a quiet affair ; ) .
The band is really good, playing music that everyone knows and will get up and dance to. We went and saw them at Skinny Dave’s pig roast and they were bringing the house down.

I made up special bar chips that get you a dollar off of your drinks and there will be some free snacks too. It is outside at The Rustic where they have a party barn, and we will have a tent too, just in case the weather doesn’t smile on us. Come on out and celebrate with us! Everyone is welcome!

Greetings and welcome!

The big holiday weekend is here!

I noticed a big increase in traffic this year starting already on Wednesday. It looks like it is going to be a big weekend.

Item one is the weather. It looks like a hot one today with temps getting up into the mid-80s. Not nice, but get it while you can. Overnight tonight we are expecting some thunderstorms announcing a cold front coming through. That will leave the rest of the weekend cool and pleasant. High temps for Saturday and Sunday look to be about 70, and Monday about 74. You will want to bring cold weather gear along, with clear nights low temperatures are expected to go down into the mid 40s.

I am not going to list rummage sales this weekend. It would be faster to count the blades of grass in Yellowstone. Let’s just say that there are a lot of them with signs on just about every corner. Rummage sale fans are in for a good weekend.

Listing weekend events is only slightly less crazy. I know I won’t get all of them but I will let you know about what I know about.

First up is Kosir’s. They have a lot going on this weekend. The river will be at a decent level for funyaks and tubing, but that is not all. Here is info from their Facebook post..

This Saturday, Labor Day Weekend! at Kosir’s Rapid Rafts
We have a great line up!
World Yo-yo champion Mark Hayward
LED and FIRE juggling with Steven Clipson
Aerial dance with Luv Joy Seamon and Sandra Newbury
Partner acrobatics with Deanna Schneider and Sandra Newbury
And Ben BJörkman as our family friendly MC!
Thanks to Jim Vogel for our beautiful lights and sound!
The Piano Man Bob Heckler will be playing at Rapids Resort Sunday night.
Just down the road The Rustic is having live music nightly.
Some posters..
Beyond that..
Amberg is having their Fireman’s Picnic.

Riverview is having a fireman’s picnic and corn roast

Red Arrow ATV/Snowmobile Club is having a big corn roast and ATV ride.

Suring is having a big Labor Day celebration.

The Town of Stephenson Fire Dept Auxiliary on Sunday Sept4th at 1:00 pm at Thunder Mountain Valley Inn

That is my list so far, though I know that there are a lot more events than that.

When I was in town yesterday and to the west Wednesday gas prices were at about $3.69 a gallon, plus or minus a few cents here and there.

That is all that I have for the moment. I will update later if I run across anything else.

Have a fun and safe weekend and thank you for visiting!

Greetings and welcome!

We have had a fair bit of rain this week. As a result stuff has started growing again. I will need to cut grass over the weekend. That also means that fire danger is low, always a good thing.

The rain has also given rivers a boost. The whitewater rafting and tubing should be good this weekend. The Peshtigo River has gone from a very low 200CFS up to a fun 350, and I expect that it will go a little higher over the weekend from yesterday’s rain.

This weekend is the Marinette County Fair in Wausaukee. There is a lot of fun stuff going on there along with some pretty good grandstand shows and the midway. Here is a link to the various events. https://www.marinettecountyfair.com/event-schedule/

Last night driving around I found a lot of deer out by the roads. I am not sure what suddenly made roadside ditches so attractive, but they were really out in force. Watch out for deer this weekend. There were also a lot of small white moths in the headlights. In places it almost looked like it was snowing.

This Saturday night The Rustic is having a band called Sons of Legends. Sunday they are having The Mix play some polka music starting at 2pm.  They have live music there every weekend, but I don’t recall any polka bands. Who knows, it could be fun. Oooom pa-pa!

On the personal side it has been a very busy little stretch of days. I am acutely aware that we are going from summer to fall, and the list of outside work that needs to be done over a certain temperature is a long one. Usually my deadline for stuff like that is October 10th. That sounds like a long way away, but with the much shorter days and unsettled fall weather, it is a lot closer than it seems. (Learned that the hard way..)

I pick October 10th because one year I was painting a van, and I was outside until almost midnight October 9th trying to get it done. On the 10th we got 4-5″ of snow and it didn’t go above 50 degrees (minimum temperature for painting the van) the rest of the fall. Ever since then Oct 10 has been my deadline for doing outside work at comfortable temperatures.

I see that the kids are starting school this week and some schools have already had open house and orientation days. That tends to slow down tourism a lot. It used to be that there was a state law that school couldn’t start until after Labor Day weekend as a boost for the tourism industry.

One last thought.. my Starlink internet is absolutely wonderful. With it just sitting in the front yard I am seeing 65-150Mb/s, making internet pages come up in a blink of the eye, and allowing us to stream HD content to the TV.  After years of really bad Hughes Net, using the internet it is now a delight. It is $30 more a month than Hughes Net was, and worth every penny.

That is it for me today. have a good weekend and thank you for visiting!
