Greetings and welcome!

Summer is here and it is beautiful.

There are all kinds of wildflowers blooming and the wildlife is doing its thing with a lot of sightings of deer fawns, bear cubs, and other critters. We went for a ride in the forest last night and had some great scenery with the moon and the stars, and the lightning bugs were adding to the whole remote quiet scene.

The locals are reporting some outstanding fishing this week. Slab crappies, huge bluegills, and some rowdy bass have been making local fishermen very happy.

The rain last weekend made local whitewater enthusiasts very happy too. The Peshtigo River peaked at about +24″ Wednesday and is running at +20 or +21 Late Thursday night. That is outstanding whitewater for late June. It will not go down much Friday, so weekend rafters and paddlers are in for a real treat. Call Kosir’s 715-757-3431.

That rain was a huge disaster farther northwest up in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan. There are some amazing videos and pictures of the damage all over the internet. It even made the national news. We dodged that bullet for the most part. Our area got between 2-6″ of rain in total. Here I was on the low end of that. Here is a map of the final radar rainfall estimate with the Peshtigo River Water shed very roughly outlined. The second picture is a map of the Peshtigo River watershed if you want to look closer.

The rain sure woke up the insect world. Driving home from Peshtigo Monday night there were a lot of moths and other bugs. My car and windshield are a mess. In the daytime there are all sorts of butterflies and moths, some giant horse flies, and sometimes  a flock of dragonflies will appear and eat the other bugs. I did use some Repel when I was cutting tall grass the other day but that was for the gnats attacking my head. Considering where I was working I was surprised to only come away with one wood tick.

More ATV routes-

I saw today that the county has continued to open ATV routes on select county roads. On Hwy C you can access the Rapids Resort, Kosir’s Rafting and Rustic Inn from Boat Landing 11 Rd. They opened Hwy C from Walesh Ln to The Eagle Creek Pub (Crazy Guys), and from Deer Lake to Firelane Rd. I heard today that they are opening Hwy X from Deer Lake Rd by Tommy’s Corner Pub all of the way to the gas station and west to Popps’ Resort and Rene’s Dining Room. I am sure that there are many other routes opening that I don’t know about yet.

We are on the map..

I got stuck in traffic today. The county was painting lines on the road and I caught up to the 12mph truck and line of traffic at the beginning of a 4 mile hilly no passing zone. As we were creeping along I noticed in the rearview that a Google Earth scanning van was behind me. The stuff on the roof was actively scanning as we drove. Once I passed the paint truck I lost him. I saw him coming later on Perch Lake Rd and some inner child thing found me hanging out the car window waving. The area has been recently scanned and I am world famous.

HughesNet satellite Internet is really on my list today. For the second or third time they put extra charges on my card. They won’t give me a refund, only a credit.  I wasn’t mad enough.. right now I am using my phone as a hotspot because the Hughesnet is literally at dial-up speed, 5-7k. I had a similar speed issue at a local business this week when I was doing computer service there. They pay $120/mo and it was totally unusable. My contract is done and I can leave any time. When my credit is used up they are gone. People ask me all of the time what I recommend for internet. Hughesnet is now on the do not recommend list unless it is your only option. When it works good it is great. That has become hit and miss, mostly miss. Between that and slamming extra charges on my card I am done.

At any rate the great outdoors is at its full glory. The fishing and whitewater rafting are outstanding and wildlife watching is in its prime. The weather is supposed to be nice this weekend so get out there and enjoy it.

Have a great weekend and thank you for visiting!
