Greetings and welcome!
The Fall colors hit their peak this week and it was spectacular. Almost all of the species were turning colors at once with even the oaks getting into the act. Usually it is a little more stretched out, but this year it came all at once. The Green Bay TV weather guy on last night said that it was the earliest color peak in 16 years.
Yesterday and today the leaves were falling at an increasing pace. Now we have some wind blowing them around, and my early trees like the maples are getting pretty bare.
The next couple of days will not be good for the Fall colors. We have a pretty significant cold front and a storm in the area that will bring a lot of gusty winds Friday and Saturday. It will also bring a temperature drop from our 70ish weather today to highs in the upper 40s for Friday and Saturday.
The storm is a pretty good one, and it is bringing the first winter storm warnings of the season for northwestern and northern MN. They could see 6-12 and some very gusty winds. Fortunately for us the storm is expected to track northeast up into Canada.
That isn’t to say that we won’t see some effect from it. Vilas Co could see 1-3″ of lake effect snow Friday night and Saturday as the very cold air blows across the relatively warm waters of Lake Superior. While we are not expecting any accumulating snow there is the possibility of a stray flake or two being spotted Friday night or Saturday.
As mentioned above, the high temperature behind the front will struggle to get up to 50 Friday and Saturday, and might make it Sunday. Overnight lows should be at or a little below freezing right through the weekend.
- Friday Mostly sunny, with a high near 47. West wind 14 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.
- Friday Night Mostly cloudy, with a low around 31. West wind 11 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph.
- Saturday Mostly cloudy, with a high near 45. Northwest wind 10 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.
- Saturday Night Partly cloudy, with a low around 27.
- Sunday Sunny, with a high near 50.
We have some events coming up for the weekend.
Wausaukee is having their 4th Annual Fall Festival Saturday Oct 6th from 9-3. They will have crafters, a farmer’s market, live music, horse drawn wagon rides, bake sales, live music and more. Here is the poster (PDF).
If you are looking for a wood burning stove Minor’s is having an open house and sale on their inventory of wood burners the next two weekends. Click on the poster to make it bigger. I got my Napoleon stove from Minor’s and I really like it.
This coming Monday volunteers are heading out to start brushing snowmobile trails on the Iron Snowshoe snowmobile trail system, and they will take all of the help that they can get. If you are interested contact your favorite Iron Snowshoe member business.
Next weekend ( Sat Oct 13th) brings the 3rd Annual CL/Mountain Lions Club Oktoberfest Celebration 2-7 PM at the Crooked Lake Community Center.
That is the news from here for today. Have a good weekend and thank you for visiting!
